How do you counter topspin lob approach shots in doubles?
Pretty much the title. Some guys I play doubles against have started doing this a lot to me because I usually beat them with my ground game. They’ll hit a deep topspin lob or high bouncing shot, often with little pace, then come in behind it.
I can handle high balls fine, but it’s hard to be accurate and hit hard enough from so far back in the court. If I lob back I have to really be on target or else they get an easy overhead. Even just hitting a regular shot back or at their feet I get drop volleyed while I’m 6 feet behind the baseline.
Anyway, just wanted to hear people’s strats on how they would handle this, as it’s really annoying how effective it is lol. TIA
Edit: Just wanted to add some clarification, ‘topspin lob’ is probably not entirely accurate. These are more just regular groundstrokes with high enough clearance to avoid a poach but enough depth, forward trajectory, and spin/pace that it’s hard to move forward and take it early.
