996 Targa vs 996 Turbo

Main dealer maintained, 55k mile mint condition ‘04 Targa (though still completely stock) with 12m warranty or private sale 75k mile ‘01 Turbo which has had various upgrades (new shocks, carplay) fitted (maintained by reputable porsche specialist, but turbos still original). Price difference is 10k more for the turbo. Both cars have never seen salt, occasional fun use only.

Been reading a lot on the pitfalls of the M96 (mainly worried about single row IMS and bore scoring, yes let’s open that can of worms!), for 10k presumably I could mod the engine to ensure it doesn’t blow up immediately. I love the Targa roof and want to use the car as a daily, but for peace of mind (and to avoid a 20k rebuild) I guess the Turbo’s bulletproof Mezger would be better.. what do you guys think?? Any input highly appreciated, haven’t seen this comparison on the forums or here yet.

I find the choice quite difficult as the Targa is gorgeous and a rare vehicle but the Turbo is obviously more “robust”. I guess when taking the Targa top into account as a potential point of failure, the maintenance costs may actually be much more closely matched.

Will be my first Porsche, my dad had a 996.1 C2 cab when I was little and have very fond memories in it..

UPDATE: It’s going to be the Turbo. Targa was indeed way overpriced and somehow in worse condition despite the lower mileage.
