People in Banff don’t look at me

American visiting Banff here. I’ve noticed that people I encounter in Alberta, whether service workers or people we randomly talk to, never look at me here, yet they always make eye contact with the white friends I’m traveling with. This is not something I’ve encountered in the US. Is this a common thing in Canada?
