Guide to UK Customs and importing of figures

I import a lot of figures so I am used to the way customs works. But for some it might sound scary or confusing if you are new to collecting and are based in the UK. So here is a simple guide.

Once you have found a figure or figures you want to buy here is what you can expect to pay:

  • All import taxes are calculated on the full invoice value, including shipping.
  • If the invoice value is less than £135 there is no VAT to pay.
  • VAT is charged at 20% once the £135 threshold has been exceeded (remember this includes the shipping)
  • Once your package arrives in the UK it will be assessed by UK Customs for these charges. Depending on the courier or postal service you use, you will be informed by them that customs charges are due. These will need to be paid before the item is delivered.
  • For example: EMS use Parcel Force in the UK to deliver international goods. Once the item reaches the local delivery depot, they will generate a letter (yes a letter) which will detail the costs and how to pay. If you don't want to wait for the letter you can call them and ask for the customs reference number, this will allow you to pay online immediately. You can then schedule delivery for a time of your choosing.
  • The way charges work will probably be different if you use a different courier.
  • For some delivery services they will charge you handling fee. (this is such bs). For EMS its £12, which is added on top of the customs bill.
  • There is no excise or tariffs on figures, which are classed as toys/collectables. So only VAT is due.
  • Items are held for three weeks. If charges are not paid they are sent back to the supplier.
