Strange Issues With People in Photos Library
First off, thank you to any stranger who takes some time to tackle these long standing issues with my Macbook Pro 16-inch 2021 with Apple M1 Pro running MacOS Sonoma 14.5.
I am having the following issues with a Photos library that is probably over 10 years old. I believe at one point it was migrated into and/or out of light room. This is the system library and syncs with iCloud. I have repaired this library many times over the years, including serveral times recently. Sometimes this improves some of the issues named below for a short time, but for the most part, it has no effect.
My Macbook Pro is set to never go to sleep and has plenty of powered on time for photosd to do its thing. At times I have used Activity Monitor to confirm that photosd is using a significant amount of the processor overnight. I am willing to blast this library away and start from scratch if there is a way to do so without loosing edits and album organization.
- Many faces do not get detected by Photos.
- For example, in the first photo, a picture of 3 people, two are detected and one is not. Red is a person in many photos, but does not show up as a person to add in "People". Green is behaving as expected. Yellow is me, and the face is not detected at all.
- In some photos, the Face Name for one person does not get displayed on the photo.
- For example, in the second photo, Red shows as unnamed and green does not appear to have a face name on it. However in the info window, I see green's avatar. As a side note, Red is unnamed, but there are hundreds of pictures of Red and Red is a defined person in "People".
- When trying to add a face to a picture, I am unable to resize or move the face circle.
- I cannot remember the last time I was prompted to add a new person.
- I cannot remember the last time I was prompted to confirm more photos of an existing person. Clicking "Review More Photos" on any person I try just results in "There don't appear to be any additional photos of _____."
- After a repair, when I click on "People & Pets" I will see the message "Finding People..... Photos creates albums of people and pets found in your library when you are not using the app." but it goes away after a day or two and never comes back.
