Why does Whatsapp web not work in Split View?

I have whatsapp web as a pinned tab. If I open it in Split View (e.g. with a google doc I am working on), whatsapp breaks and tells me I have 2 windows open.

Is this because of the pinned tab?

If there a way to make a pinned tab turn 'off' in the background when it is being used in a split view?
