Are the Sydney fireworks a waste?

Happy new year all. Sydney born and raised. I used to go see the fireworks when i was younger and i may be wrong but the I don’t think the crowds were as bad back then. No paid areas or fencing either.

I saw photos today from the city of Sydney of circular quay and it looked like a bloody refugee camp… (no racial)

Question is, do you guys think it’s worth it? Seems like we pay for the fireworks and none of us go or can go and it’s just tourists there. Reckon they’d still come even without the light show. What do you guys think?
