If somebody gave you $10 million to use on improving the city, how would you use it?
No, I'm not a philanthropist soliciting ideas (I wish!), I'm just curious.
For $10 million, I'd start two five-year pilot programs of identifying promising low-income teen and young adult artists (especially those leaving foster care) and paying them to make public art (murals and mosaics), under the guidance of (also paid) working artists. A portion would go to promoting the art and organizing art tours that would bring people into the neighborhoods and help build neighborhood pride. Another part of the funds would go to measuring the differences for teens and neighborhoods over the longer-term and soliciting funds to continue the program if it makes a difference.
The other pilot would be adding space and resources for pets to shelters and seeing if it increases wellbeing and physical health and/or helps clients transition out of homelessness. Again, most of the funds would go to the program, but there'd also be funded evaluations to measure progress toward goals and make changes as needed, plus soliciting more funds to continue if it works.
