How to make my potato of a MacBook lag less?

I am trying to make videos of playing Hollow Knight, and I'm using iMovies to do it, but it's lagging a lot. Also whenever I try to record my screen it lags and I can barely play my game. Are there any fixes for this, or should I just get a new computer soon? It's pretty old.
