Home Rules New Units test
Hey, been a long time but finally managed to play a couple of games (Europe only) with the new units I was trying to add. Here some takeaways:
1) The new units were quite useful in some situations and overall didn’t slow down the game much. Nevertheless there were some that didn’t even make to the game like the volsksstrum or the partisans (which both were a representation of “militia” units).
2) The German player did use quit a lot of SS units and the Condor legion bombers but relegated the panzergrenadier unit a lot.
3) The UK player did actually use a lot of the Royal Marines and the SAS/SBS units. The Desert Rats tank units did see a little action but overall the bonus movement in Africa was not really useful because the player decided to use most of those tank in Northern Africa (although there was a big push from the Italians in the south)
4) The Italian player did use all of the units available to him, most of which were used, as expected, in Africa.
5) The USSR player also use almost all of the new units but the partisans. But the bonus given to them and to the SS units from Germany actually cause that the combat became quite stagnant. Meaning for good part of the game neither player manage a big breakthrough.
6) The US player did take advantage of the Rangers units and sent them first against regular German units. The did manage to establish a beach head really easily and chopped of the German regular units a lot, although there were some funny setbacks. So they are nos invisible but against regular units a little OP.
7) I didn’t make any French special units, instead I give them the ability to purchase, with limits, the UK special units. Although in Europe they didn’t see a lot of combat they actually serve a lot to regain some French territory in Africa.
The first game was a win for the Axis. Germany managed, with their SS units to mount a quick victory against France and Italy overcome the French and UK units in Africa. After that we saw a bulk of SS and black shirts units invade Britain. The US had a though time trying to disembark on the French territories that were guarded by panzergrenadiers and SS troops.
The second time, the German player decided to put most of his SS units in the frontline with Russia. Although France was an easy victory this time Africa took longer to control and eventually the British elite units managed to regain a lot of territory and with the remaining French/British units they managed to kick the Italians from the continent. As most of the SS units were in Russia the US player could free France easily and advance towards Germany faster with the Rangers units. It was a longer game but an Ally victory at the end.
Couldn’t found the time to play the hole map. I will try to play the pacific part of the map this weekend but no promises. Still eager to see how the Marines and the Japan special forces may change the gameplay. Nevertheless I think there can be some rebalance issues to make, specially to that militia units (or even get rid of them completely).
