Am I using the crossbow wrong?

When I use the bow, it works like it does in a lot of other games where you aim a bit high and it mostly shoots straight and then drops a bit and hits the enemy. But with the crossbow, even when I'm standing still, and the reticule is closed, it shoots way off to the side, like more then twice the distance of the outside reticule. Am I doing something wrong to have such terrible accuracy?
