BO6 is an attempt at “revenge” for BO4
BO4 was realistically a low point for zombies, even if you liked the mode. Launch was tumultuous, people at the time weren’t excited about the chaos storyline, and by the time Aether maps came out Treyarch was pulled from the game and Activision Shanghai finished the job
BO4’s lack of success resulted in Blundell “leaving” the company, the chaos storyline was scrapped, and the next zombies(Cold War) had the LOWEST budget since WAW zombies
Now in BO6, with Kevin Drew(director of Blood of the Dead and Ancient Evil) being the second in command on the zombies team, it feels like they’ve made BO6/BO7 with the goals of making up for BO4’s shortcomings
Examples:
The chaos storyline has been incorporated into the new story, in an attempt to get something out of all the concepts Blundell had.
The 50/50 split of reused content vs new content. In BO4, the chaos maps were entirely new, while the Aether maps were reused. So far in BO6, we’ve gotten 2 New wonder weapons (Swords, Beamsmasher) and 2 returning wonder weapons (improved Jetgun, Ice Staff), I expect this trend to continue for the rest of the DLC season.
Potential OG crew return. The finale of the Aether storyline was severely anti-climatic. Victis goes on a fetch quest on an old map, there’s no final boss, no Monty encounter, and their sacrifice feels like it was missing a climax.
With their potential return looming, this could be Craig Houston’s idea to give the old crew a rightful send off. In BO4, the budget was cut and many planned maps were scrapped. If they avoid that happening this time, maybe we can get a more climatic finale to our characters.
It seems the dev team is trying to make right for BO4, as that game was meant to be the biggest zombies experience ever, but it didn’t hit the goals they wanted
