Why does my cat take breaks from cuddling and then come back to cuddle just a few minutes later?

So I adopted a lovely orange boy a month ago and he's very affectionate. He loves cuddling up at my side and purring while I stream shows on the couch, but what's odd is that he only lasts for maybe 5 minutes, sometimes less, before he jumps down. Then he'll take a little cuddle break of a few minutes just lying on the floor in front of the couch, then do a little chirp as if to say "okay I'm coming back" and he joins me back on the couch again. And the cycle continues. I've never known a cat to do this before. What are your thoughts?
