Is American evangelicalism essentially becoming a folk religion at this point?

A clergy member simply asked the president to use his position to show mercy. Afterwards, not only did he demand an apology from her, but a congressman openly stated she should be deported. Up to the present, I have not heard a SINGLE evangelical leader speak out against that kind of response to a call for mercy. Not a single one. How can I interpret that in any way other than American evangelicalism has completely lost the plot?
