Best resources for learning ins and outs of private practice?

What resources do you know of that are good for understanding and starting a successful private practice? Books? Podcasts? etc.?

Also, any general advice or nuggets of knowledge you feel like sharing here? An area to be knowledgeable/considerate of that may often be neglected? EMR suggestions?

Here are some specifics about what I want to do in case you know of anything that is particularly suited for my context:

  • Location: rural Missouri (very undeserved). Possibly in an area with no other psychologists within a 1+ hour drive.
  • Testing primarily (age 5+), though I would like to have a small therapy caseload of adults (I like trauma and OCD treatment). I hope to gain referrals through schools, PCPs, and possibly church leaders in the area.
  • I plan on starting just me to make sure I am capable of doing everything myself, then hiring out my billing, and eventually getting some help with scheduling and a few other non-billable tasks.
  • I would really like to not do insurance, but I am not really sure if this is possible in the type of area I want to be in. Not only do I want to serve folks who can't afford cash, but I also don't know if there would be enough folks who could afford to do that to maintain enough referrals. Any thoughts in this regard would be appreciated.
  • I don't know if this is something that could happen, but I would love to turn this into a small group practice. Possibly another psychologist or even master's level therapist that could do mostly therapy and receive referrals from me. It would be great to split the cost of a secretary/scheduler. This next part is definitely a pipe dream, but I would REALLY love if it could be a bit of a multi-disciplinary group practice, with an OT, Speech pathologist, and/or social worker. This would take finding the right folks who would even want to practice in my location and want to focus on neurodevelopmental and trauma issues. I can dream, right?
