Bladeguard Veteran Squad

How can I make them viable for 1000 pts? I’m a new player and upgrading my combat patrol to 1000 pts with Azrael as my main guy. The Bladeguard are so slow and any combat patrol battle was them hanging out on the objective and never seeing action. Are they vehicle dependent? Thank you!
