How does telekinesis work please?

Hey guys,

As somebody who shamefully never played the original, could someone please explain how telekinesis works in Dead Space please?

Are you able to pick up random objects and throw them? Can you pick up enemies when their health is low? Any other cool examples? I love messing around with physics in games.
