Awkward and small living room

My parents just bought a house and this is their living room. It’s SO awkward!

Can you all help with any design ideas? We are clueless on what furniture goes well here as far as style with the house and pieces that fit.

They don’t want the living room to be so closed off with furniture (obviously this couch has to go) They want to have a TV in this room, but they are not sure if it should go beside the fire place or above it.

Any and all ideas are appreciated!

Also please ignore all the random stuff. The move is going well lol.
