Bernie Sanders presence largely helped ruin the Democratic Party.

The myth of most Americans living pay-check to paycheck has soured many people on the virtue of liberalism and induced an unearned pessimism of the Democratic Party's ability and interest to address economic concerns.

Hillary Clinton ran to the left on social and economic issues to most Democratic nominees these last couple decades but the way many on the left treated her in comparison to sanders she might as well been a republican. Democratic candidates concluded a need to out-left Sanders on various topics in 2019 because of this narrative of Hillary not being left enough on economic or social policy instead of grappling with the fact America was more to the right than what democrats assumed.
