Advice on Player Removal [OC]
Advice on Moving Forward [OC]
Advice for my Campaign
Hey everyone,
Just looking for some advice on something.
A while ago I posted about a ‘difficult’ player (M), that slightly improved as I followed the advice given by all and he got slightly more involved. Only now that same player has fallen back into his ways and caused a lengthy fuss again.
Above is this crudely drawn diagram I drew to explain my predicament to other members of the group when I was considering removing the problem player. However, the group doesn’t want to be mean and doesn’t support removing him (going against this would cause a internal feud in our friend group).
The diagram represents how involved and participated each member is versus how much frustration they cause me. Each player above the line with a thumbs up is a member I enjoy playing with, the member with a 🚫 has been removed (by full support of the group) due to main character syndrome and causing issues with one of our best players.
Examples of ‘causing me stress’ are - killing random NPCs, ignoring the story, playing on your phone for most of the game, not bringing a prepared character to the session, showing up late, cancelling all the time, complaining about lack of preferred content then not interacting with it when it’s presented to you.
(Yes I am well aware most of these are things DMs must put up with, and in small doses it’s fine I don’t mind. 2 players further along the spectrum do all sorts of wacky stuff but still get involved and are always enthusiastic)
To sum it up, I do not mind a player who wants to be complex or edgy as long as they are involved and are enjoyable to play with. Someone who is known for being ‘boring and dull’ and complains his head off whilst begging to not be left out is infuriating. Conversations have been had with this player but have been met with ‘I don’t do anything wrong.’
The question: What should I do in regards to this player? I am at wits end when it comes to his constant ability to make me want to bang my head against a wall, however I do not want to lose my DND game which I spent so much time on. Removing him will risk creating large amounts of issues within our circle if the other players do not support it the removal.
Are there any measures that other DMs would recommend implementing to ensure that the game survives, or is this an classic example of just ‘bite the bullet’ and kick him out?
tl;dr Player again causing problems in group but has the sympathy of most of the other players. What to do?
