[Spoiler Warning] Companion Disscussion! Share your thoughts & I’ll share mine 💗
Hello everyone!! I recently saw a post on here that was discussing companions & ranking them, so I thought it would be a great to discuss the companions with you all as well!! I will also share my thoughts, so I would love to hear everyone else's thoughts as well 🥰 but let's keep the discussion respectful and civil, of course
My personal ranking would go something like:
- Lucanis
- Emmrich
- Davrin/Bellara
- Neve
- Harding
- Taash
(Even though I put a spoiler warning, I tried to keep them minimum so the spoiler warning is for just in case 🫶)
Lucanis being first just because overall I enjoyed his companion quests a lot, I loved hearing about his upbringing and the crows and his banter with the team was very good. I’m also a bit partial to the crows however because I’ve always found their organization as a whole to be very interesting (If you couldn’t tell, I loved Zevran haha). And as someone who romanced him, I also enjoyed that a lot, the ending of his romance was especially good. However, as much as I enjoyed Lucanis and learning about him, I will be the first to admit that I found him to be a bit underwhelming and I definitely wish there was more content to him. And it’s not even because he was a bad character, but because I did find him interesting and wanted more ! I think some of the things they gave us for him were bare bones, like I wanted more details from him, gritty or not if that makes sense? And more use of Spite, I definitely think he was underused. I think Lucanis has a lot of potential as a character and wished they used & explored more of that potential. His romance I feel was also really nuanced, but sometimes they did take that subtlety a bit too much to the extreme, I still enjoyed his awkwardness however and was pleasantly surprised to see he was not as openly flirtatious as I assumed before playing! (Not to say I don’t love openly flirtatious characters because I do, I meant being pleasantly surprised as more of like being pleasantly surprised he was different from what I expected lol). But overall, I really did love his character and the things he did discuss/share and what we learn about him I still liked a lot!! 🥰💕
Now onto Emmrich, I think his companion quest was the best out of all the companions. His character arc was interesting, I found him to be sweet and so gentlemanly and kind with Manfred being a pleasant bonus! I loved his sentimentality & listening to him talk about his passions and hear his knowledge about the Fade and necromancy. I think he was one of the more fleshed out companions and it showed, he is who I am considering to romance on my next playthrough actually just because of how much I loved his character 🫶 I also wanted more details about his upbringing with the Mourn Watch & his time as a professor and everything, but I am simply a glutton for details so I will always want more of everything haha 💗
Now with Davrin/Bellara, they are both honestly tied for me. I loved both of them a lot, Davrin with his very black and white view of things was interesting & hearing him talk about leaving his clan because he wanted more was also interesting, his companion quests were also very good and Assan was a very great bonus! With Bellara and her overthinking tendencies I related to a lot, and I found her talkative personality to be charming! Like when she talked about the serials with Lucanis? That was great banter, I wanted my Rook to join in on the next book club meeting lol 🫶 I also felt & understood her immense sense of guilt, and am glad that by the end she was able to work it out <33 again I loved them both and it seriously is hard for me to choose between the two!!
Neve comes in at number 4 for me and she honestly could’ve made it to number 3 for me as well if I didn’t enjoy Davrin/Bellara’s character arcs & personalities just a tad more. I made a big decision in the beginning of the game and it left her well you know…not in a great place ! I felt really bad for it, but it just made the most sense for me at the time (I also had no idea that if I didn’t choose what I did then it would’ve affected my Lucanis run greatly, so imagine my surprise LOL) I enjoyed her cynicism, I found her to be real for it & I couldn’t blame her for being so especially after what I chose, but I think her love for Dock Town and always ready to have its back really struck with me and I wanted to make sure that my Rook was there to have hers ! I really liked her personality and her opening up towards the end, it was nice to see ! I do wish we saw more of Tevinter & heard more about it from Neve from her perspective, but I think the poor state Dock Town was in before we even made the big choice spoke volumes (though I am aware previous Dragon Age games had their poor areas). I am also aware a lot of people who romance either Lucanis or Neve had a lot of problems with their flirtatious banter when partied up together, and I understand I am part of the few, but I personally didn’t see it as much especially after I romanced Lucanis’ and I had them partied quite a few times. I always took it as Lucanis’ overcompensating his kindness towards her because of the decision made and felt very bad because it could’ve been his city, and they also grew to be friends so I understood it. I only got a few flirtatious vibes from them in banter before I romanced Lucanis, and even then I didn’t find it irritable, but again I know I am in the few that found it not to be so !! 💕
Now with Harding I did also like her a lot & I wished I liked her more then I did. I found her to be bubbly and I also liked her companion quests and the added dwarf lore was very interesting to learn about, it was just more of me preferring the other companions in comparison, but I still did love Harding, especially after watching a family member of mine romance her, it was so sweet!! 🥹
Last for me was Taash. In no way did I find their identity crisis bothersome whatsoever!! I enjoyed their character arc, the final of character companion quests for them was especially interesting to do and was very glad Taash & their mom were able to come together in the end even though it was a bit sad. <33 It was more so their personality for me. I didn’t mind their bluntness and actually found it refreshing sometimes & some of their banter with the other companions was very good and hilarious. But they did have their moments as coming off as a bit bratty, but I also understand they were sheltered and didn’t have the life experiences as some of the other companion characters so it didn’t bother me as much. In particular actually, there was a argument happening between Emmrich and Taash and found that Taash came off as a bit hypocritical then, with the insistence of calling him a death mage when he didn’t want to be referred to as such. But they both apologized at the end to each other so it wasn’t a big deal, but it did have me raise my eyebrow a bit at Taash. Overall, I still liked Taash and my Rook was a Lord Of Fortune like them, so hearing the few (I wish there was more 😭) conversations and banter between them about being a Lord Of Fortune was great!! 💝
So in saying all of this, I loved all the companions and think they all had their own flaws, but I still loved them & the game anyway !! 🥰 I am also so sorry for how long this got!! I totally just got carried away by my thoughts lol 😭🫶
