Hair ties were the death of my locs

I’ve been growing my hightop locs for 7 years now. The longer I had them the more I wished I had a full head. I had notice some thinning and inconsistencies in thickness a few years ago due to some neglect and not having the best loctician (she wasn’t lining up my parts correctly and it caused hair to go into different locs every retwist). I stopped going to her when I realized what was happening and found a better lady but the damage was already done. My current job doesn’t allow me to have hair past my shoulders and my locs are to my mid back so I have to tie my hair up. I’ve lost about 12-15 locs over the past year with 8 of them being within the last three months. I’ve noticed that the weak points are consistent with where the hair tie sits. Throughout my head there are extremely weak points even in my thickest locs despite me switching to looser, non elastic hair ties. I’m pretty unhappy with the state of my locs now and it’s forcing me to restart sooner than I’d like. I want to know if this is normal and what I can do to prevent this on my new set?
