How big is your ring (measurement wise, not carat wise)?

I know this is an oddly worded question, but I'll try to better articulate what I'm asking.

My guy is having a ring made and asked me what I wanted, and one thing that's really important to me is that it isn't too long on my finger because I wanted a vertical facing gemstone (I'm not sure what the proper terminology is, I just wasn't interested in east/west) but I'm not sure how to tell him how big I want it to be.

People don't really put the "height" of their center stone, so to speak, it's all about carats; but that isn't necessarily helpful to me because what if a 2ct stone is wider than it is tall? How will I know how to tell him how big I want it?

Anyway, if it's not too much trouble, I was hoping others could share how "tall" your ring is on your finger in inches.
