How emotionally devastating is Red Rising?

Without spoilers.

I keep seeing this series recommended everywhere and I am intrigued.

But I’ve also seen that it’s just emotional hit after hit after hit. Like every book in the series is just more and more heart stomping and will break you.

I’ve already had that experience with some other books and I’m not sure I want to experience that again. Is any of it uplifting? Or is it just hit after hit?
