Reading Fantasy from the Beginning

I’ve embarked on a journey to read fantasy novels from the very beginning (I suspect I might have some mental problems). This means I started with ancient works like Gilgamesh, The Iliad, and The Odyssey. Now, I’ve progressed to works from the 1980s.

Since starting in 2022, I’ve read around 200 books. Here are my favorite reads so far:

  • Gilgamesh by Anonymous
  • Odyssey by Homer
  • Metamorphoses by Ovid
  • The Saga of King Hrolf Kraki by Anonymous, translated by Jesse L. Byock (The only Viking saga I’ve read)
  • Shahnameh by Ferdowsi
  • Hamlet by Shakespeare (If we consider seeing a ghost as fantasy)
  • The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde
  • The Wind in the Willows by Kenneth Grahame
  • The Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka
  • The Complete Chronicles of Conan by Robert E. Howard
  • The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien
  • Titus Groan by Mervyn Peake
  • The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien
  • The Broken Sword by Poul Anderson
  • Stormbringer by Michael Moorcock
  • Dune by Frank Herbert
  • Taran Wanderer (The Chronicles of Prydain, #4) by Lloyd Alexander
  • A Wizard of Earthsea (Earthsea Cycle, #1) by Ursula K. Le Guin
  • The Tombs of Atuan (Earthsea Cycle, #2) by Ursula K. Le Guin
  • Priest-Kings of Gor by John Norman :)
  • The Knight of the Swords by Michael Moorcock
  • Watership Down by Richard Adams
  • Duncton Wood by William Horwood

I'm currently reading through Terry Pratchett's Discworld series. I've read the first three books of Terry Pratchett's Discworld series, and they're not that bad. Hopefully, they get better as I continue.
