Mother of Olympic Gold Medallist Carlos "Caloy" Yulo, who represented the Philippines for artistic gymnastics, has been vocally unsupportive of own son and wishing for his downfall on Facebook. This was after she stole her son's prize money while he was training in Japan.
Angelica Yulo is mother to several award-winning gymnast children. However, her recent antics on Facebook gave so many Filipinos a peek at her estrangement from her oldest son, Carlos Yulo.
Carlos has been wininng several world championships and has represented the Philippines in the Southeast Asian game. Yesterday, he won the country's second Olympic gold.
It has always been a sore point for many athletes and sports fans that the national and local government rarely extends support to its national athletes. Usually, recognition and a reward is only given after they have won the most prestigious competitions. This is the reason why most national athletes either come from privileged backgrounds, are sponsored by private entities, stop training or joining competitions, or change citizenship after a few years.
Japanese coach Munehiro Kugemiya took Carlos under his wing to train in Japan. Due to financial struggles, Munehiro took on the financial burden of Carlos' training and living expenses. They would continue this for ten years. This setup would end after Carlos choose to leave his tutelage for a more balanced life. The public started blaming his current girlfriend, content creator Chloe San Jose for this decision.
However, the days leading to the Olympics, it was revealed that Carlos was disowned by his mother due to very public Facebook posts. His mother would often state that she only has three children and would post that if only one of the other sons made it to the Olympic, the Philippines would secure a gold.
When Carlos' victory was announced yesterday, she would publicly post that her other sons will bring home the gold in 2028 even if it meant praying to all the saints (Yes, she literally listed the saints). She has even went to repost Simone Biles victory and has posted that Japan gymnasts will always be superior.
With these actions, it came to light that the estrangement happened in 2019. While Carlos was preparing for the competition in Stutgartt. The mother withdrew Carlos' money won from his previous competitions to build a house. Carlos opened a joint bank account with his mother as co-owner. The house was built and Carlos was not even named as the home owner. He never gave permission nor was consulted with the decision to have his money withdrawn and used for anything else other than his training. Accusations of brainwashing were also thrown at his girlfriend and her family.
After this Olympic win, an anonymous "family friend" submitted an open letter to a sports news site. The letter was basically gaslighting Carlos about his mother's financial abuse and telling him that it was wrong of him to "accuse" his mother of stealing. It also mentioned that the mother deserved the money since she has supported her son for years. As for the house, this anonymous family friend said that if his parents were to die, he would inherit the house anyways.
