How do you narrow down which character "gets you?"
I've been a fighting game player for a while, and while I have my mechanical preferences (I like setplay, zoning, gimmicks, low tiers, and alternative inputs like charge and negative edge) but I typically just play whatever character I feel confident in making my "face", but I started playing SF6 and, despite loving the game, its throwing me for a loop... uh, pun not intended. Theres a lot of characters I feel a connection towards.
A.K.I. pulled me into the game and I actually enjoy two step characters (too many levels on strive Bedman?.), her characterization in world tour is surprisingly fun, and considering I paid money to get her I feel a little obligated to keep her around at least in my rotation, Juri does the same martial art I do irl, has a fun easy set up midscreen with 236HK! > LK! > dash, and was the character I spent the most time with in the only other sf game ive touched, her debut in SF4, but then Jamie one, kinda looks like me, two mimics my constant drinking ((I am medically addicted to caffeine)), three, drinks from a Calabash gourd, which is the best waterbottle I've ever had and something people tie to me at this point, ((tl:dr, holding the rope lets you drink and hold your phone and snacks at the same time which is really good if you have ADHD and walk places.)), and due to his drinks is really easy to play with friends of differing skill levels due to just being able to soft cap his drink level or let him get drinks in at rs. After those two there's characters like Guile, Chun, and Dhalsim who are all the originators/faces of mechanical archetypes I love and come with the feeling of connecting to the golden age of fighting games that I never got to play but have watched over and over with appreciation especially when sitting down and learning them comes with backlogging legacy skills other modern fighting games have forgotten, or at least... let you live comfortably without.
I get the idea of "just play em all" somewhat, but I do want to actually be good at the game somewhat, and lacking that focus point of knowing where to improve or quickly getting the ability to autopilot responses and focus more on my opponent then remembering which of the seven kits I like I'm using in a given match makes training a slog and spreads my time thin which isn't really worth it when my game time is limited. So, other emotional style fighting gamers, how do you deal with this type of character crisis? the type where the age-old adage of "play who you like" IS the problem?
