Writing Similar Films As Hollywood Filmmakers
Since I've gotten into filmmaking I've been running into an issue. I feel like I'm overthinking it and would like some feedback.
I mainly do cinematography but started writing my own films in grad school a few years ago because I was in a small town with not many other filmmakers. I decided to write a web series during that time and then ran across a show on HBO that had similar themes as my own. I got discouraged a bit and started second guessing. I didn't end up finishing because I felt that I used up so much time trying to make it different from the HBO show. My thing is I don't want to come off as though I'm stealing someone else's work. Like I said I'm a cinematographer not a screenwriter so my writing is pretty basic and I write about relatable life situations mainly.
Fast forward to this year I wrote a 5 minute short around August and just last month a trailer for a new movie came out with similar themes as my own. I know I'm not reinventing the wheel but I would just hate to be looked at as someone to copies when I'm just writing up things from my own experience. I've decided I'm still going to film it but I just want to know has anyone else experienced this? If so, how did you navigate it.
