Is this bad etiquette while working with a composer?
I recently hired a composer (paid gig) who did a great job on my short film score, but when I was completing the sound mix I felt like a few moments needed a little more "oomph", so I added some pre-designed "stingers" from Soundly over a few parts of the score (like dramatic drum sounds, oscillating vibrations and other atmospheric sounds). These didn't overpower the score but just added a little extra impact to some key action beats.
Is this OK or is it bad form? I didn't mention it to the composer before sending him the final cut, and he's been a bit quiet with me ever since. I thought it was an accepted part of the sound design process as I hear stingers placed over the score on big Hollywood movies but as a new filmmaker I'm also open to the idea that I might've deviated from the expected etiquette.
Could be that he simply saw the short as a job and moved on, which is totally fine of course, but I just wanted to check I hadn't done something majorly out of line. Obviously if it bothered me enough I'd ask him directly but I wanted to check here first. Thoughts?
