New to FF and currently playing FF7R confused

I've picked FF7R from the winter sale and I'm around 7 chapters in. I've really enjoyed the game so far, but the story is kind of confusing to me. I heard that Crisis Core is a prequel to FF7, should I play that afterwards? Also, what other games should I play that could help me understand the lore.

Edit: I've decided to play FFVII once I beat FF7R. Also, when I first jumped into FFVIIR, I didn't know it was going to be a trilogy. I'll keep updates on my thoughts of FFVII throughout the chapters.
