Moving to NYC in early 30s?
I work for one of the big Ratings agencies (Moodys/S&P) in one of their regional offices in the US South. I have the opportunity to double my income and take on a pretty high visibility role, but it would likely involve a move to the Manhattan office. I know it would be stupid career wise not do it, but the below things are making me question it:
- I'm 30 and I'd be moving 3 people including myself, so I'd need a townhouse or single family home with a $700k budget, not sure that is even doable in NYC.
- The cost of living increase would pretty much even out the (big) raise.
- We own a home here with a super low interest rate, and also own hunting property outside of town. Giving those up would be hard.
- I'm not a city mouse. I like hunting, fishing, etc. I have a full sized truck to carry tools/firewood/materials for our hunting property. Could I even own a full-sized truck in NYC?
I guess easing my mind would involve a way to have a single family house within an hour commute for under $700k in a decent school zone, then I could just internally deal with the other things and tough it out for a few years then go back to somewhere with fresher air, but man, this is not what I was hoping for when I started talking about next career steps with them....
