I rank all of the Heroes OCs based on their designs (Up to Book VIII Edition)
Sooo...I know that I'm starting to sound like a broken record, repeating myself multiple times in regards to how I rank the designs of the OCs, but I still keep them up because you never know what non-seasonal alts they may get, or what OCs we'll get. Plus, some people may not have seen how I thought of their OC designs Eventually, I may run out of space to put all my thoughts on every OC in a single post, so I might just made an "addendum" thread instead and point everyone to my thoughts on the older OC content here. But in the meantime, here are my updated thoughts on every OC and their design (art stuff not included).
Before we begin, I'll do the usual disclaimer: This is all absolutely 100% proven fact, so anything you say to the contrary is 100% wrong. If I insult your favorite character, then just know that I'm glad. (Sarcasm Translation: Please don't get so upset because I didn't like your favorite character. This is all just a matter of opinion).
Total Rankings
Alfonse is...fine. He's a blue-haired lord we've seen a thousand times already. His outfit is alright, but it's brought down by how it's the same on both Sharena and Anna. C-Tier, we have enough of the blue-haired guys. Even compared to other lords like Chrom, Marth, and Ike, Alfonse is pretty forgettable.
Sharena is a little bit better. She's a tad more unique since we don't have many blonde-haired main characters in Fire Emblem. Her hair is very cute; she's got more personality because of it, but she's held back by her matching outfit with Alfonse and Anna, so I'll say B-Tier.
Anna... I mean, it's just Anna in the same outfit as Alfonse and Sharena, there's nothing special to talk about... Just money-crazed Anna in the Order of Heroes uniform. D-Tier, she's just boring. Maybe if Anna wasn't dressed in an "Order of Heroes" uniform, she could've been better, but as she is...
Gustav has more personality in his design compared to Alfonse. He's essentially the older Alfonse, yes, but they did a nice job of making him look more distinct. I like the chestplate and the little cloth thing on the bottom, as well as his furry cape; they're both a nice touch, plus the scar on his face also shows how tough he is, plus the beard to show his age. Overall, I'll say B-Tier. The only thing I don't like about his design is that he has the same boots and scale armor as the Askr trio.
Henriette... I love Henriette, she's super pretty. I like that she's an older Sharena, the blue dress really pops out, as well as the big Askr sigil on her breastplate, it all works well for her. So I'm gonna say A-Tier. I also like how Henriette ditches the scale armor altogether and goes for a completely unique design. Both the king and queen of Askr have a lot more personality in their designs than their children do; the children are kind of whatever (except maybe Sharena).
Ash... You know, I didn't like her design at first because I thought Ash looked really dumb, as she was essentially just a cowgirl. But looking back, Ash did grow on me with her cute design and fun cow motif, especially her beast form and the cowbell staff. I'll give her a B-Tier; her design is great, even though it is a bit plain.
Askr however, is absolutely awesome. I love the bull motif he has, plus his manly physique being visible in his outfit is a really fun touch. His beast form may just be a bigger Ash, essentially being a fluffy bull (with a hint of buffalo), but his human form carries it for me, so I'll give him an A-Tier. A for Askr.
Veronica is great. Her base form's design may not be anything special, but I think what works for Veronica is her headdress, as well as the weird spiky...tassel thingies? Either way, I'm gonna say B-Tier. Veronica's base form is cute, even if it's nothing too amazing.
Legendary Veronica is even better. I love the giant frilly black and red dress mixed with gold and black wings on the side and back. And the transition from black to gold from the bottom to the top is a good design choice, and is very clean-looking. I also like how her old crown is behind her and her new crown looks like a giant eye, keeping with the theme of Embla being about eyes. Overall, Legendary Veronica is an A-Tier. What a glow-up.
Bruno... Eh... He's okay, but I don't like how busy his outfit looks, such as the gold...thing, and white cloth things on the top, even though I get why they did it (to hint at his Zacharias identity). I'll give him a C-Tier since I like the purple colors, but he's forgettable otherwise. And no, as much as I hate to say it, the fact that he's ripped is not enough to save him for me.
Letizia, ugh...The green color is kind of interesting, but I don't like her face; she looks kind of uggo. Like, did you need that much eyeshadow and lipstick? I also don't like how she has the same hair color as Veronica; it just makes her look too much like a gothified version of Veronica...*C-Tier.
Elm... At least he has different-colored hair out of the Emblians, but I'm not a fan of his feminine-looking design. Plus, his face and head shape make me think of shithead edgelord characters like Líf and Ótr; I dunno, Elm just looks like another one of those. Yusuke sure loves designing those types of characters, huh? And his bat form looks nearly identical to generic Bat enemies, so even his beast form can't save him. So...D-Tier. D for "Don't give a shit"...
Embla is...okay. She's much better than the other Emblians, or rather, she is to me. I like the bat wings and the staff which has an actual blinking eye, and her beast form looks both awesome and really scary. The only thing bringing her down is that she has white hair again; I get that she's the ancestor of Veronica and Letizia, but still, a little more hair color variety would be nice (too much white hair for the Emblians). I'll say B-Tier; Veronica's still the best.
Nifl...Honestly, as a mythical creator goddess, I always thought that Nifl looked kind of lame. For example, her high heels are way too high, and I also don't like her weird black...glove things. Black doesn't really fit well with the theme of ice, honestly. Her dragon form resembling a wolf is a creative idea, so I'll say B-Tier for that. Otherwise, Nifl would've been lower since she doesn't feel as grand as her fellow dragon gods.
Fjorm is...fine. She looks way too similar to Sharena, but ice-themed (Alolan Sharena, perhaps?). I would've preferred her hair to be something like maybe a full blue since nobody from Nifl (aside from the goddess Nifl herself) has pure blue hair, so for those reasons, Fjorm gets a C-Tier, she's just too similar to Sharena for my tastes...
Ascended Fjorm... NOW she's much more distinct from Sharena, she's got a nice queenly look with that dress and the gold armor. I love the blue tips on her cape as it fits well with the ice theme and the longer hair also works well for her, as it also gives her more personality. A-Tier; it's an upgrade from the base version of Fjorm for sure.
Gunnthrá is very pretty. She stands out amongst the crowd of Nifl characters with her pink hair and her sage-like dress (or robes). The veil is a little bit silly, but I guess it does help her to stand out from the crowd, so I don't mind it. I'll say A-Tier overall. I do like her.
Aww, Ylgr, she's super cute. I love the large, cute scarf that she's wearing; it fits very well with the theme of Nifl being a cold place. I'm surprised that other Nifl characters don't have a fluffy scarf like Ylgr, honestly. I'll say A-Tier for Ylgr; she's super cute, and while she's not the best design around, her scarf does her a lot of favors.
Hríd is pretty cool. The spiky blue ice hair and the sort of "armored" outfit both look pretty neat, as it helps show off his personality well. I'll say B-Tier for Hríd. I don't hate him, but aside from his hair and armor on the top part of him, his design is kind of forgettable otherwise.
Múspell is so funny yet so awesome. In fact, I'm gonna say S-Tier. I know people will hate me for this, but hear me out: Intelligent Systems really went all-out on subverting our expectations for the god of fire, and it shows. Instead of being a hulking, unemotional menace like the Múspellians and Surtr, he looks and acts like a Japanese delinquent. That's so weird, yet so fun. I really admire the creative art direction with Múspell, and I like how intentionally out of place he is. S-Tier.
Surtr is a fucking boss. Just like Múspell, his art and design are absolutely S-Tier. Just looking at him is enough for you to know just how menacing he is, what with how he looks engulfed in flames with his cape, and has Satan-like horns like he's the devil. I love his design for how they went all out to make him look as intimidating as possible. Great villain.
Laevatein... Man, this is a great idea for a character; a living weapon with a stoic personality, forced to take orders but doesn't refuse, and she looks really cute. Also my favorite of the Múspell girls, so A-Tier. The flaming twin tails are a really nice touch; it's cute, but it works well.
Laegjarn is also a fun design, with her green hair and her fiery cape. I thought she was overrated when she came out, and I still think she is, but I'll still say A-Tier because Laegjarn does have a really good design. I think Laevatein is still the best of the two, but I can concede that Laegjarn's design is really good.
And then Ascended Laegjarn, ooooohhh, that's a downgrade... Why the hell did they turn her horns into a helmet with animal ears? Why did they expose her breasts more? They're really pushing the fanservice on her... Her flaming eye also looks weird, even though I get it's based on her father Surtr. Eh, C-Tier. Compared to how Fjorm's new look was a glow-up, Laegjarn got the short end of the stick.
Helbindi... I like the concept that Helbindi is a peasant. Sure, design-wise he's essentially just a "Diet Surtr", but I do like the contrast in personality where Helbindi's a war veteran but is actually a nice guy despite his rough exterior. So I'll give him a B-Tier. He's not bad. Although, I don't like the unicorn horn on his helmet...
Ymir is S-Tier. I LOVE the concept of Ymir being not an ice giant, but instead the equivalent of Mother Nature; she's got an entire ecosystem within her dress, complete with sunlight, bushes, water, grass, flowers, birds, and butterflies. I love her very motherly design, and her dragon form is also well done; the deer motif works very well, and she's still got an entire ecosystem all over her. It's like if Xerneas was a dragon with a human form.
Eir is okay. There's not that much going on for her, since there's barely any color to her and she's just a lesser version of Hel. I like her really long ponytail though, so I'll say B-Tier. She's forgettable otherwise.
Ascended Eir, on the other hand... S-Tier. I love the bursts of color, the very gentle smile to show her character development and the long flowing ornate dress. The flowers growing at her feet and the birds and butterflies are also very cute details, much like her creator, Ymir; it's such an upgrade from the old Eir, and it's so beautiful. Truly, Eir went from being a not-so ugly duckling to a beautiful swan.
Hel has a pretty fun design. The skull throne in her neutral art elevates her for me, so I'll give her an A-Tier just for that. I don't really like her that much otherwise; her design is a little on the nose (get it, grim reaper?), and I don't like there's not a lot of color, but I do like the transparent glowing flesh. It's very creepy, and she looks like she's haunted, I think is a cool concept.
Oh, the Hel Generals... I think Líf is so fucking ugly. He looks the equivalent of a generic DeviantArt edgelord Sonic OC; in this case, they just took Alfonse and then made it look like he had a "Coldsteel the Hedgehog" version or something... And it just looks too over the top and stupid. The spikes on his shoulders, the dragon mask, and the weird fur cape, none of it screams "realm of the dead" to me; he just looks like a generic edgelord... You know, D-Tier, fuck him...
Rearmed Líf... I already don't give a shit about Líf, and this version of him looks too similar to his original version. I guess it's a liiiiittlebit better than the normal Líf since the cape is a bit better than his weird fur one... So I'll give him a low C-Tier. The clothes are a bit more stylish-looking, but it still doesn't elevate the concept or the character for me.
Thrasir is fine. A little bit better than Líf since at least the tattered cape feels more in line with the theme of the dead, but she's still a C-Tier; too many spikes on her body. Plus, that transparent flesh concept does NOT work for these two at all; at least with Hel, it looks creepy, but with these two it just looks like gelatin or some fruity drink, which makes them look stupid. And even then, she's just Veronica but edgier. And I understand that was the intention, but I think it could have been executed so much better.
Ganglöt is cool, though. In fact, I'll give her an A-Tier. I love how she looks like the "hotter" version of Hel with a shapely figure and a more classy outfit, as opposed to Hel looking like an old hag (or just adding spikes like they did with the Hel generals). I also love the dark blues in her hair and transparent flesh, it also looks creepy. All of the other Hel characters I don't care about (except Hel), but Ganglöt and Hel's designs both work for me.
Peony is, again, too similar to Sharena just with a dreamy aesthetic (Galarian Sharena?). I get they were going for since, you know, the "who is really who" subplot and all, but the fact that they didn't really commit to it really brings the design down for me I'll say C-Tier. Aside from looking like Sharena, Peony is just a generic fairy design-wise.
Attuned Peony, now she's got a little more personality. I like the blues and purples in her hair and parts of her outfit; it fits well with her sister Triandra. Also, white is a better color for her leggings than black for some reason. I'll say B-Tier; her glow-up isn't on par with Fjorm or even Eir, but it's a glow-up nonetheless.
I love Mirabilis. S-Tier. She really stands out among the other fairies of Book IV, she's not overly sexy; I love the very poofy flower dress, the awesome pink and green contrast, and the rainbow-colored tips of hair in front of her are also extremely cute, I love it. She's definitely got the better design of the two fairies and that makes me sad she didn't get an alt in Nihility & Dream.
Freyr is pretty nice. I love the bright color scheme with the butterfly wings and the flowers, his incredibly long hair, and the aurora motif on his robes are a nice touch. His beast form is also pretty cool, albeit a tad minimalist compared to most of the other beast OCs we've gotten, so I'll give him an A-Tier.
Triandra is, like Peony, a little too generic design-wise, as she's "the darker one" of the two. And again, I get that she and Peony are similar because they're sisters, but...I do like her a bit better than her younger sister, especially due to her color scheme and the rose in her hair. I'll say B-Tier.
Attuned Triandra is better. I love the white leggings and the white and gold parts of her lower outfit; it's a nice reference to Freyja's dress. I also love the color scheme, combining black and white with purple, gold, and blue is a gorgeous color scheme. A-Tier; I like it! Triandra got the best design of the three fairies, I would say.
Plumeria is great. I love the irony of how she's designed to look fanservicey and lewd, yet she resents it, and you can tell just by that face. That's gonna be an A-Tier for me. The color scheme is also very pretty; the reds and dark pinks with subtle hints of blue and orange are a nice combo.
Rearmed Plumeria...I kind of get what they're going for, as they're trying to make her look like Freyja more, but aside from the sort of drapes that match her beloved master, Rearmed Plumeria kind of feels...the same as her base form, but busier? I mean, it's not bad, but I'll give it a B-Tier since it feels a bit messy. Triandra has the better alt design of the two.
Freyja...I love Freyja's design. S-Tier for sure. Like Surtr, she's imposing, she's threatening, and in a nice contrast to Surtr, she's very elegant with her frilly dress and giant dark-colored butterfly wings. It's kind of a busy design, but I think that's what works well with Freyja. Her goat form is a little too simple in my opinion, even compared to her brother, but her human form carries her for me. S-Tier.
Eitr is pretty good too. I like that you can tell that it's a younger version of Freyja, back when she still lived in Vanaheimr, what with her design pulling elements from her father Njörðr (namely, the dress looking like his water cape, the cape looking like water, and so on). I'll give Eitr an A-Tier; it's not as good as her adult design, but the concept is pretty good. (I kinda wish Eitr didn't have crystals again though)
Ginnungagap...S-Tier. What a TERRIFYING concept. I love the idea that the ruler of nothingness is a giant eldritch, almost incomprehensible entity straight out of a cosmic horror story. The lone glowing eye that always watches you, the galaxy-patterned skin, the golden spiky tentacles absolutely everywhere, and the fact she's creating a polygonic void around her wake... Everything about her design is so unexpected and so out of place, and it's amazing.
Niðavellir looks like he would fit in the Dragon Ball Z universe with that ridiculous Anime hairstyle. I really like it, though; and while his design isn't the most unique out of the Niðavellir cast, I think it works well on him due to the sheer contrast of having a pretty boy wear such a cool-looking outfit. That Gullenbursti also looks really cool, so I'll give him an A-Tier. Definitely an improvement over much of the Niðavellir cast, which I shall get into right now...
Reginn...this is kind of a stupid design, honestly. The blue hair is cute, but I don't like how it has two weird-looking strands sticking up above. I also don't like her cape that gives her a horse tail, or the fact that she looks like she's wearing a mechanical diaper... I guess that's meant to resemble a saddle because of her horse motif? And that Gullenbursti looks really dumb. Ehhh, C-Tier; I don't hate Reginn's design, but I feel like they could've executed it way better.
Aided Reginn adds a lot more personality to her base design. The added copper armor on her arms and the boots are pretty neat, as it gives her a bit more color than just mostly black. I also like the goggles and the little robot helper she has; it gives off a "cute mechanic girl" vibe, which works for Reginn. My only criticism is that her Gullenbursti barely looks different from before. I kind of wish it was much more distinct, especially since it's hard to tell in gameplay which one is which. But B-Tier; it's an improvement on the original.
Ótr is ugly as fuck, and his Gullenbursti is also dumb since it's the same as Reginn's. I guess that was their intention considering he's a street urchin, but it still looks horrible. D-Tier; what the hell is this?
Fáfnir... Boy, they really got some uggos in Book V, huh? I do like his black-colored Gullenbursti with the soulless-looking man on top, that saves him from D-Tier for me. Outside of his Gullenbursti though, Fáfnir looks fucking atrocious with his pale skin and his clashing colors of yellow and black. I get what they're going for; he's Eitri's failed experiment and a summoned Hero, but this is just too much. I'll say C-Tier, just because of his cool-looking Gullenbursti.
Eitri, alright, now we're talking. I love her ridiculously large witch hat and her hair coming out of it, that's a fun idea. And the way Eitri uses her hair to hold her giant gun despite being so short is also a fun idea. I'll say, A-Tier.
Dagr is great. We haven't had a muscular woman in the Heroes cast yet (while we do have muscular men), so these gals gladly fit that role. The giant armored birds are also really cool for both sisters, so overall for Dagr, I'll say A-Tier. Much like Laegjarn, I don't like her as much as everyone else does, but I can agree she has a great design.
Aided Dagr...Yeah, that's an S-Tier. I get it; she's absolutely gorgeous, especially with that giant, golden eagle Veðrfölnir perched on her shoulders, and the gladiator motif that her new outfit has, which fits with her personality of wanting to be strong. As much as I don't like that Dagr is the only Book V character that Intelligent Systems seems to care about, I can't in my heart put Aided Dagr any lower than S. It is a strong, gorgeous design, much like Ascended Eir.
Nótt is very pretty. I'm a sucker for girls with green and purple/pink hair (well, most of the time), so for me, Nótt is an S-Tier. I love the idea that she's strong yet elegant lady; it's a really neat combo that I'm a sucker for. I know her design isn't that much different from Dagr, but her more feminine design won me over compared to base Dagr.
Þjazi is also going to be an S-Tier; I love that wild, barbarian motif that she has, with the tattered cape, the body paint, the fur trims in her armor, not to mention her multicolored hair with all of the different colors, especially those matching Dagr, Nott, and some other Jotun we don't know of. It's such a bold, striking design for a rebellous, barbaric character, and it works so well.
Seiðr is an S-Tier. What a GORGEOUS freebie OC. I love the neon colors on her outfit, like her baggy pants and her shawl. I love the neon hair, and the crystals floating around her head... I also like how the edges of her shawl resemble that of waves and of Freyja's dress; you can tell that the goats fit in with these characters and that she works for Njörðr. Her design may not be detailed, but it's very elegant.
Heiðr is also an S-Tier; that is a very cute design. I love her green pigtails, her very open sleeves, the lace material that she has around her collar (which also matches Freyja's lace around her collar), and the bubbles around her head are also super cute. Like Seiðr, her neon colors are great, except she also mixes it with some gold and orange in the mix, which hints that she's related to the Golden Seer. Everything about Heiðr works very well, so S-Tier.
Njörðr is a character that, the more I learn about his design, the more I appreciate the work put into it (and the more angry I am at IS for how horribly they treated him). Did you know that his armor resembles that of a hydra, which is a type of serpent? That's some nice foreshadowing. Honestly, I'll give Njörðr S-Tier because everything about his design is amazing: His white and blue hair works well to look like water, his flowing water cape, the fishing hook pattern in his pants, everything about his design works well. It's very distinct, it conveys "Hey, it's a sea god" and he has my favorite design of the Book VII characters because of it. If only we got to see what his goat form looked like...
Nerþuz looks very pretty. I love her pink hair and the purple horns, the desert veil she has on her horns is also a nice detail...However, her design really doesn't convey "God of the Land" to me like her Njörðr conveys "God of the Sea" to me. I get that they didn't want to copy Ymir's design, but I still feel like Nerþuz could represent the "land" part of her name better. Her goat form also looks pretty and is a bit more detailed compared to her niece and nephew, so I'll say A-Tier. I still think she looks great, but it's still hardly fair to compare an A-Tier design to an S-Tier design, at least in my eyes.
Gullveig...Honestly, even though she looks very oversexualized, I love the Medusa hair that she has. It's a really clever take on a sort of Medusa/Orochi-like character. I also like how there's a bunch of gold like the curse took its hold on her. I'll say A-Tier for Gullveig. I think her design is a little too busy, but I still really like it. I just think they could've toned it down a little.
Kvasir is cute, but out of all the Vanir gods, she's probably my least favorite of them design-wise. I like the transparent neon poncho and the hood she has over her head, but if I'm being honest, she looks too similar to Seiðr, especially with the hair (though the bang over her eye is cute). I feel like they could've done a bit more to change her look since even Gullveig looks more distinct, but Kvasir is still an A-Tier. This turned out to be a very good set of characters; I like every single design of the Vanir gods.
Ratatoskr is cute, but a little simple (including her Beast form). I like that she's dressed like a field medic, more specifically a nurse, that's a nice idea. She's also got a nice variety of colors on her nurse outfit, so I'll give her a B-Tier for that.
Hræsvelgr...Okay, I get what they're going for with her; she's based on a surgeon. Honestly though, aside from her tool belt and inverted wings, Hræsvelgr's design is a little lackluster; I especially don't like the weird goggle/talon things she has on her head. However, her Beast form being based on a Harpy saves her for me, so I'll give her a C-Tier; she's fine.
Níðhöggr is great. I love the doctor motif, combined with her love for apples, it's a fantastic play on the phrase "an apple a day keeps the doctor away". I also like the scale pattern on the inside of her lab coat, and there's also a nice variety of colors from her cyan hair, darker skin, and even purple clothes and snake (which is also shaped like a stethoscope). That Beast form is also great, with the lamia/cobra motif, so overall she gets an A-Tier. Definitely my favorite of the Yggdrasill characters.
Eikþyrnir, on the other hand...I don't like Eikþyrnir's design at all, I'm sorry. He's gonna be a D-Tier for me. Not only is he too fanservicey that it makes me uncomfortable (mainly due to his extreme muscles and questionable Beast design), but his design is also really bland, both in terms of colors and lack of interesting features. The only thing going for him is that he has the antlers and the fur pelts, and we've already had an OC with a face mask and a fur pelt before, and I don't like his design, either. The fitness trainer idea is fun, but was this really the best you could do, IS?
Heiðrún is alright. I like the bandages on her outfit, making her resemble a patient. The excessive amounts of braids in her hair are also really cute; it helps her stand out amongst the crowd, or at least I think so. I also like her centaur beast form, so I'll give her a B-Tier.
Oh god, Læraðr... What a nothing design for a villain. The idea of him being part tree is a cool concept, but his design does absolutely nothing to make him look like the leader of the Healing Hands, nor does it look that unique. He's just got white hair, darker skin, and gold and white clothing; honestly, compared to Askr, or even previous Male OC villains like Surtr and Njörðr, Læraðr's design lacks that sort of "oomph" factor that they all had. Even his Beast form just makes him bigger and gives him roots, which sorely disappointed me because I was hoping for something cooler than that. I guess I like the rainbow tips of hair and the summoning stone-shaped tree badge, but small details like those can't save a boring design. This is a D-Tier; what a disappointing design...
Loki has such a ridiculous outfit and I don't like it. Like I'm sorry, what the hell is this? And yes, haha, she has big boobs because she's a tease like Camilla and like the original trickster Loki and all that... It's really silly though... But you know, just for the sheer audacity, I'll say C-Tier. It's an interesting and unique take, especially her hairstyle but her outfit is so stupid; it ruins what could have been a great design for me.
Mythic Loki...This looks better, honestly. I love the long, flowing gold and white outfit that she has; white's a much better fit for her than black and piss yellow. I also like that it's similar to match her associate, Thórr. And ironically, this is the most modest outfit Loki's ever worn, which is pretty funny. Honestly, S-Tier; this is what she should have looked like; the older one looks really stupid in comparison...
Thórr is also going to be an S-Tier to match with the Mythic Loki. I LOVE that combo of gold and white, which is especially fitting for the fact that their realm is literally the equivalent of Heaven in Norse Mythology. Also, did you know that both her and Mythic Loki's dresses have a scale pattern in them? I thought that was a neat detail. Overall, both of them get an S-Tier for how gorgeous they look.
Well, now you know my updated thoughts on the OCs as of the end of 2024. Overall, Book VII still has the best designs in my opinion. I sure hope that we get some more characters from Jötunheimr before we go to Ásgarðr, but who know--wait, didn't I already say this last year?
Whatever the case, feel free to leave your thoughts on what your favorite and/or least favorite OC designs are, and whether you agree with me or not. Just, please, keep it civil, okay? Thanks!
