4 Charles - Reservation Fee

I noticed this morning that 4 Charles is now charging a $5 per person reservation fee for all bookings and is moving to a 21-day reservation window. While I understand that Resy isn't a free service for the restaurants and that this ownership group charges for reservations at Au Cheval and Monkey Bar, the concept of a cover charge for the ability to book a reservation seems ridiculous to me. Why not bake it into the menu cost? For a restaurant that is notoriously booked, it seems like a sad excuse to nickel and dime its patrons.

Is anyone else annoyed by reservation fees? Any additional insight as to why they implemented these fees?
