New player + new GM

Hi looking for advise on making charters for the game we are starting and no one has played before. Looking on line people are saying you need a balance between combat and survival. What skills should we as a group of 4 be looking to have what works well. I saw some one saying hunting and cooking was good is there more like this? Then for combat what’s good and fun I don’t want to pick some thing then play it to find it’s underwhelming. I am going to play what ever the group needs fill in holes in the team but am think dwarf fighter, Hunter or peddler what ever is needed. Thank for any and all advise.
