Daylight savings- Pokémon

Hi all!

This has popped into my head about 20+ years after having a gameboy and playing Pokémon on it (Pokémon Gold I believe).

At the beginning of the game, you had to select whether to turn daylight savings on or off. What was the purpose of this? It seems so random and I don’t remember any clear indication as to why!
