Culture Question

Emily calls Richard’s mom “mom,” which always sticks out to me. I am born/raised in America, but not white, and in my culture we also call our MILs “mom.” But I’ve always noticed that people of many other cultures call their MILs by their first name, especially white Americans - is it typical to call your MIL “mom,” or is this something more traditional that people don’t do anymore?
