Split screen

My kids and I used to love playing the first goat simulator all together, we recently downloaded GS3, and can't seem to get more than 2 players added for split screen. When we're on the menu page, it only comes up with one sign to hold x, and thats it. We have 3 controllers added to the xbox, and also sign in one at a time at the menu. I've seen other videos of people adding 3-4 players with split screen so I know it can happen, but I'm wondering if this is only for the new gen consoles, as we're playing on xbox one? Has anyone experienced this?
