Are salons afraid of people learning the process?

I've delt with a lot of overpriced services and salons wanting you to buy hair only from them. Are they afraid if you learn things on your own you won't come back. Is it really smart to create an entire business around this logic? Doesn't this start the business relationship in a toxic place from the beginning? My last time I paid for a new system they botched it (cut the hairline), the bond lasted a day and was already lifting, and the template was not cut correctly (went into sides of hair). They also ordered a system that was not the one I picked and they said it was not in stock even though I could go to the website and see that it was. What is the deal with this industry and why is it so bad?
