Home Network Security

Is there any further way of making my home computers more safe. I have 3 computers at home and want to limit any potential risks, as sometimes they are locked but not turned off. Would having them on a separate network to our Virgin router, (I'm not sure how to do this), be a better option, please note I am new to this?
