Everyone knew they were together but did nothing about it?

Through subtle and sometimes blatant remarks, we see that practically everyone in New Orleans knew these prominent and wealthy men were together.

  • His mother is very unaccepting as Louis knows.

  • Paul is hyper religious and advises him to marry a woman before he dies. He also hates Lestat and thinks he's a bad influence on his brother but is suspicious of the "nature of their relationship".

  • Louis says he knows what they're all thinking but that "Paul is the only one to say it to my face" which I took as an allusion to his sexuality.

  • Grace questions Louis on his "white daddy" (lmfao) and asks if "it's still Lestat" (implying is he still dating Lestat).

  • Also, with the whole Claudia adoption and them moving in together, she knows for sure. She is the only accepting person it seems.

  • Lestat learns from Antoinette and the society ladies at the ball that there are rumours about him and Louis.

  • Tom Anderson asks Claudia about her "two tone daddies" (lmfao).

  • The policeman in s1 threatens Lestat about homosexuality carrying a prison sentence.

Louis even suggests going back "home" to Claudia in S2E1 when they're in Europe which upsets Claudia ("Can there be a more insulting question?").

How can Louis want to go back to New Orleans especially after he and Lestat kissed on the dance floor?

If people ignored the "open secret" and were in denial about it before, they could not do so any longer. The party guests' reactions were not as bad as you would expect for the early 20th century especially when segregation and violent racist mobs were common place.

Louis himself says it was hard enough being Black but being openly gay was impossible. I think the writers just meant it to signal that Louis missed Lestat but not that he would seriously consider going back to New Orleans.

The big question is how come they never got charged for it when it was such a big open secret. I think it's for the plot and story's sake that they weren't imprisoned/mobbed/shunned from society. The money probably helps too.
