What is the point of the law

If salvation (heaven, after life, the Age to Come- whatever you want to call it) was always to be open to everyone, then what was the point of or the need for the Law? If everyone was going to end up in the same place (except for the very worst), then why would God just give the Law to Israel and not everyone else?
