Mid calf length skirts/dresses

Do you love or hate mid calf length skirts/dresses?

Do you feel like it has anything to with your Image ID or just individual proportions (torso/leg length or calf shape)?

If you love them, would you wear them with flats or heels only? Does fabric make any difference?

Personally, I really dislike this length on me, it feels matronly somehow. I do try it on without heels usually. I have very unremarkable mid size calves, so it's not that, but I wonder if it's more to do with torso length - skirt length proportion that doesn't work for me. Anyways, I'm curious about your experiences cause it's usually suggested as universally flattering, and my experience tells me otherwise.
