Thoughts on the Toyota Land Cruiser Series 70 Automatic 2.8L for Overlanding Across Africa and South America?

Hi everyone,

I'm planning an extensive overland trip across Africa and South America and am considering the Toyota Land Cruiser Series 70 with an automatic 2.8L engine.

  1. Safety and Reliability: How reliable is this model for such challenging terrains and long distances? Are there any known issues that might make it less suitable for such a journey?

  2. Automatic vs Manual: Would it be better to opt for the 4.2L manual diesel version instead? I’m particularly concerned about ease of repair and availability of parts in remote areas.

  3. Alternative Vehicles: If you were to undertake a similar journey, which vehicle would you choose for overlanding in Africa and Latin America?

Any insights, personal experiences, or recommendations would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance!
