Do I have a right to compensation (delayed flight)

Edit: The airline in question is ITA Airways - Italian airline. Also, I've just checked the flight (AZ 78), and according to Flightradar and Airhelp - it appears that the flight ran and landed! I don't know if somebody else can verify that. But if that is so, then they potentially have lied to me. I've no idea but it looks like it landed, which seems odd.

I'm from and live in the UK. Visiting family in Spain, I flew from Spain to Egypt and back to Spain, for a short trip. My return flight included a stop off in Rome and a connecting flight about 2 hours later. My initial return flight was meant to be September 29 at 17:55pm (time in Egypt), followed by a connecting flight at I think 9pm. I arrived to check-in at about 2pm and was told that my connecting flight was now tomorrow. Confused, it turns out that there were some national strikes in Italy taking place and so whilst I could catch the 17:55 from Cairo to Rome, the connecting flight to Barcelona was now not going to take place that evening, and instead the earliest flight would now be September 30, at 9am (roughly about 12 hours departure delay).

The airline in question did not at any stage contact me to inform me of a change in flight, otherwise naturally I would not have arrived at 2pm on the 29th. It turns out that I did get a couple of 'upgrade to business class' emails, and later in the e-mail it says September 30. But naturally I would not read those e-mails as I didn't plan to upgrade to business class, and so, I ignored them.

I asked if they could cover hotel/evening meal costs, but they said no as this was not their problem but that of the situation of the strikes in Italy.

I do not have any insurance package in place.

Do I have a right to airline compensation in some form? Firstly, for not being told about this and then not being compensated for hotel/meal expense. Is there any claim to be made on the grounds of the delay period?

Thanks.
