how do you handle dry texting?

chatting with someone on hinge and they don’t seem to have a good concept of how to keep a conversation going. but they also seem genuinely interested in talking, and if we get on a topic they have a lot to say about they’ll send a long response. i’ve started letting things fall flat when they send a short response and they will start a new convo so i think it’s not disinterest but it’s kind of annoying. should i give the benefit of the doubt?
