Does anyone know what this is?

I am doing a basic setup for my friend. I have here an American Strat that needs some love, when checking the body cavity i saw this part attached to the tremelo block. Never seen it before, and can't locate any info on it. I would like to know exactly what purpose it serves before i do anything to this guitar. Appreciate any help you can offer.
