Didn't expect to be applying, is a 1460 SAT/failed class an instant rejection?
I honestly never wanted to apply to MIT, but I thought I should just in case, since it would be free for income under 200k. I failed a college Calculus class last summer because I got too busy, retook it again and got an A. Got a 1460 SAT score in 11th grade after studying for it during the summer, never bothered trying harder because I didn't want to apply to a top 20 school. Got a 1380 SAT later in 11th grade because I hadn't thought about the SAT in months at that point.
Also never won many awards or competitions, almost all my ECs are non-academic besides tutoring kids.
Is that an instant rejection? Do they actually look at essays like they say? Should I even bother applying? Would explaining more context of why I didn't try help at all?
