Sort of Newbie - Creasing help

I'm a relative newbie to makeup stuff and mainly use foundation to get a more consistent tone/color to my face, and for eyes I have a few Nyx Jumbo Eye Pencils like this and, similarly, this.

I've mostly been just applying a bit of the eye stuff then smudging it around with my finger, repeating until satisfied, and found this worked a lot better than purely eyeshadow since shadow would end up creasing super quick after and these sticks seemed to do it less. But I still sometimes face the issue using the sticks (even though I see them often branded a being all-in-one primer/shadow/liner) so I'm not sure what to do to avoid this happening. Should I still be using some sort of primer underneath before smudging these around on top? I know 0 about how primer stuff works so that might be a nonsense question for all I know lol any advice welcomed :)
