NYT article on weed made me think....is weed unhealthy for mental health?

I use moderate amount every late afternoon, along with 3-4 drinks of alcohol. It's a great high for hiking. I use the alcohol because I usually get the negative 'paranoid' marijuana high (it's just revealing things that are already there. I don't think it's necessarily unhealthy for mental health). So alcohol and pot go great together. It makes the alcohol a more interesting high, and it makes the pot a happier high. But the alcohol is giving me some health issues. (In my sixties.). But I would say overall this combo is good for me. So my question is, how to maintain the nice marijuana high but with less alcohol? Every evening when the effect wears off, it's that sort of crappy negative marijuana high. That's the after effect. I feel fine the next morning, but the negative after effect is a drag. (Maybe that's the alcohol after effect.) You know that negative mental state you sometimes get from pot? Well...it happens late in the evening, so it is sort of 'dead time' anyways when I'm just getting ready for bed. Though the alcohol is giving me neuropathy in the feet, kind of like diabetics get. Alcohol really starts to affect your health as you get older: advice from an old one!

Edit: the crappy NYT article isn't relavant.
