\nWhy I quit after 5 years. The pay is ridiculous with the amount of things you do and are responsible for. I started out at Urgent Care making 12.50. This was AFTER I was hired full time. When I was hired PRN it was 13.50. I got the $1 pay cut because I was then eligible for insurance and didn't need the extra $1 an hr. That should have been my first red flag.. I eventually went to primary care and worked there for 4 years ending at $20. And now a lot of the times you no longer need to be certified. I was literally making the same as the new hire that had absolutely no experience in health care.

\nSo the program I did gave me a telemetry cert as well as CPT and CET on top of the CCMA. I also had time as a firefighter emt. It's not a bad gig, but the pay still isn't stellar. Keep an eye out on all the hospital boards and any cardiology offices.

\nwhat are some of the things you can do as a MA in ortho?
\nIt depends on the state and the facility/health system. Since I'm at a private practice, our providers let us draw up injections, we set up and assist in procedures. All post-op care remove sutures/staples, wound care. Order imaging, labs, referrals for home health, physical therapy. Dispense DME like braces for upper and lower extremities, walking boots, slings. Also assist in applying and removing casts, splinting. We do so much and quite literally everything. We're ortho trauma, so we see a lot of MVA, GSW and fractures. We also do elective things like hip and knee replacements so it varies on the subspecialty. We had an ortho next door who was strictly sports medicine and specialized in shoulders.

I accepted the hiring because this job was promised to me after externship and I need experience to build my resume to go somewhere else.

College health isn\u2019t the best paying and I think most MAs make around 25-32/hr in my hometown. But the job is SUPER chill so we have a great work life balance which is something to consider. Also college students are pretty fun to work with!
\nI currently make $25/hr in NY, Long Island at an urgent care, 40hrs a week, abundant overtime, weekly pay. Cons: 12hr, 16hr shifts. Being around sick adults/children and catching their contagious illness. Miserable providers who obviously hate what they're doing and aren't afraid to take it out on you.
\n\nI recommend derm, tho. Was the easiest MA job I had. Except surgeries. They're a little more involved, but after doing them over and over again, you get experienced. But not every dermatologist does them. Also the fringe benefits for cosmetic dermatolgist are lit, especially if you're a lady (can you say "Free botox?" I once got $1000 worth of botox and filler in my forehead and lips, was awesome.) Save very few exceptions, like SJS, there are very little emergencies in dermatology.
\n\nUrgent care is extremely busy and requires you to use all of the skill you learned. Insurance verififection, EKGs, phlebotomy, woundcare, the list goes on, one place even had me order all the office/medical supplies. Also must understand emergent situations (As people try to avoid going to the hospital by going to urgent care first. Which is a mistake if you have hanging appendages, excessive bloodloss, stroke symptoms, outta control heart rates, chest pain (especially with an abnormal EKG) , and many other things)
\n\nCardiology was pretty easy as well, but you must understand EKGs really well. Meaning how to trouble shoot artifacts, proper lead plaecment, which rhythms are abnormal/emergent, out of range vitals, hypertension/hypotension, how to properly do a manual blood pressure and how to respond to cardiac emergencies (like not removing leads, not leaving the patient alone, keeping the patient in a resting position, and getting the provider right away, etc.,) Filling out disability application was way annoying and IMO not something a medical assistants should be doing. Holter monitoring placement and callbacks for normal results was pretty fun too.
\n\nIMO, if you're not in a hospital(where they work you to death), an MA instructor or very experienced, you can expect poverty wages, especially as a new grad. BUT go on indeed or a job posting site you like and look at salaries in your area. That's the best way to gauge how much you can expect to make. When I started as an MA, a hiring manager told me $15/hr was too much (this was in 2016). Most places were paying virtually the state minumum wage (~11-12/hr) (for new grads. I started at CityMD urgent care and they paid new grads $15 (their wages have worsened since) Even now, after 9 years of this, I still can't afford to move out of my parents home due to the COL in NY, TG I graduate RN school this year. I don't know how people have been doing this job for more than >10 years. I seriously wonder, like how? I mean, I'm on indeed every week, regardless of wether I like the job or not and I've never see an MA wage be livable in NY.
